Most pet name sites are lists without sources. A name appears, sometimes a one-word gloss appears beside it, and there is no way to tell where it came from. PawNamer is our attempt at the other thing: a reference where each entry shows the source tradition behind it.

We are a small team of writers and researchers, not linguists or veterinarians. What follows describes how we work, not a guarantee of the result.

Who we are

PawNamer is operated by Ngoc Vietsmall, based in Cau Giay, Hanoi, Vietnam. We are a small independent team — editors and researchers who between us have named, fostered or lived with more animals than is strictly reasonable.

We publish under a team byline rather than individual names. Every list is compiled and reviewed collectively, so attributing a page to one person would misrepresent how the work is actually done. For anything concerning this site, write to contact@pawnamer.com and a member of the team will reply.

How a name gets onto a list

Every name passes three checks before it is published.

Origin and meaning. We consult published etymological dictionaries and established name references, and record what we find. Where sources disagree — and for popular names they often do — we note the most widely attested origin and flag that it is contested. We would rather show the uncertainty than present a tidy answer we cannot stand behind.

Etymology is a field of ongoing scholarly debate, not settled fact. Entries here reflect our reading of the references available to us and may be incomplete or superseded.

How it sounds in use. A name has to survive being called. We cut names that are hard to pronounce consistently, names that collapse into mumble at distance, and names that rhyme with common commands — "no", "sit", "stay", "down" — because those measurably slow recall training.

Whether you would say it out loud. A joke name that is funny in a browser tab is a different proposition at a vet's reception desk, repeated back by a stranger. Funny names stay on the site; names that only work as a joke do not.

Where our data comes from

  • Published etymological dictionaries and name references, for origins and meanings.
  • Public pet licensing records from city open-data programmes, for popularity. We do not infer popularity from search volume — searching for a name is not the same as using one.
  • Our own records of which names people shortlist and copy on this site, used only to order lists, never to invent trends.

What we don't cover

We write about names. We are not veterinarians, trainers or behaviourists, and we do not publish health, diet or behaviour advice. Where naming touches training — avoiding names that clash with commands, or renaming a rescue — we stay narrowly on the naming question and point you elsewhere for the rest.

For anything concerning your animal's health or behaviour, talk to a licensed veterinarian or a qualified behaviourist who can actually see the animal.

Corrections

If an entry looks wrong, we want to know, and we would rather hear it bluntly than not at all. We review reports and update pages where a correction is warranted, crediting whoever caught it unless they prefer otherwise. Get in touch.

Important notice

Everything on PawNamer is general information published for interest and inspiration. It is not professional advice of any kind — veterinary, behavioural, linguistic or legal — and should not be relied on as the sole basis for a decision about an animal in your care.

We compile entries carefully but make no warranty that they are complete, current or free from error. Etymology is an area of continuing scholarly disagreement, and reference works differ. Use of this site is at your own discretion, and to the extent permitted by law Ngoc Vietsmall accepts no liability for any loss arising from reliance on its contents.

If you spot something wrong, tell us — that is how the site improves.

How we pay for this

PawNamer is free and carries advertising. Some links to products earn us a commission. Neither of those influences which names appear on a list or in what order — there is no commercial relationship that could, since nobody sells names. See our affiliate disclosure and editorial policy.
